Coming out of Detroit, Gerald Donald is one of the most important cats in the electro scene. But even if you don’t know him on a first name basis, we bet you will know at least one of his projects… Do Heinrich Mueller, Japanese Telecom or Arpanet ring a bell? How about Dopplereffekt or Drexciya? Yeah, we thought so.
This mix by DJ VLR from Norway pays tribute to a man who has been at the forefront of groundbreaking electro music ever since the late 80s. As you will hear, the man has a very distinct trademark sound. Incredible production with intricate robotic rhythms, industrial machine machine sounds interspersed with sometimes catchy, sometimes beautiful synth melodies and robotic vocoder lyrics.
The common recurring theme through Donald’s music is that of the relationship between science and music. From robotics, the internet and communication to space travel and science fiction, he and his various collaboration partners are constantly exploring and experimenting through the medium of music. But unlike many more experimental electronic musicians, the thing that stands out the most about Gerald Donald’s projects is that manages to experiment while maintaining a sound that is loved by everybody from the most casual of electro listeners to the most hardcore of fans, and dare we say it — music snobs. You only need to look at some of the artists he has remixed — there are not many people out there who could remix for more commercial artists like AIR and Kavinsky without blowing their street cred in more underground circles, but he manages to do just that — all without sacrificing his own sound and production style.
His latest and current project Zwischenwelt is a collaboration with German Kommando 6/Venus Noir/Bodyvolt label owner Beta Evers, Penelope Martin and Susana Correia. Zwischenwelt is a German world meaning ‘In-Between World’ and their album (soon to be released on Aphex Twin’s label Rephlex) explores themes of parapsychology, telekinesis, telepathy and the paranormal. While it is certainly more on the dark and experimental side than most of the music we feature on Cold Crush, let’s just say we are totally hot for this album and can not wait for it to drop.
